Introduction
Latin has been one of the most influential of the world's languages
Although not used as the common language of a country or region, Latin is still a major component of modern languages and culture
Even today some latin words phrases and ideas are found throughout our everyday vocabulary science and art
Latin has not been spoken as a active language since
Nevertheless During the time when Latin when was spoken there were great advances in civilization.
Roman civilization provided the roots for our modern understanding of medicine and architecture as well as many other fields
Latin mythology has provided a foundation and important images for modern literature
Latin provided the foundation for the Romance languages include 47 languages including English, French and Spanish
Although it is considered a dead language it is still very much alive today.
History of Latin
Early Latin dates back to the 3rd century BC
From around 100 bc to 150 ad Classic latin was official language of Roman empire
by 200 ad even though classic latin was official language vulgar latin was spoke more commonly among the merchants, soldiers and farmers
With the fall of the roman empire vulgar latin and latin dialects became the common language of the provinces and the foundation for Romance Languages that evolved during the following centuries
Mythology
Roman mythology also has had an impact on modern culture in fields ranging from art to astronomy
Many paintings and sculptures, especially from the Renaissance period, were of gods and goddesses
Examples of this include Titian’s painting Venus of Urbino depicting Venus goddess of love
Bernini’s sculpture Apollo and Daphne depicts Apollo, god of light, and the nymph Daphne, being turned into a tree
Astronomy also constantly references Roman and Greek mythology
Examples include the constellation Pegasus named after the mythological winged horse Pegasus, which has a group of stars that roughly outline a shape of a horse
Ursa Major is a constellation whose name in Latin means Great Bear and is associated with the myth of Callisto and Cynosura
Art, Astronomy, literature
Titian a renaissance artist has a painting, Venus of Urbino depicting the goddess Aphrodite
Many current constellations such as Orion, Andromeda, and Pegasus come from characters in Greek myths
Fluffy from Harry Potter is based off of Cerberus from greek mythology
Many spells in Harry Potter are based off of Latin roots

There are many influences from Roman architecture on today’s architecture including columns, domes and arches
The White House is an example of influence from Roman architecture with columns at the front
Roman columns come in three styles Doric, Ionic and Corinthian
Roman columns were constructed so well that many of them remain intact today
The Capitol Building shows an influence of Roman architecture with its columns and domes
The Gateway Arch is a modern example of an arch
Columns are very popular in American architecture today

• The Romance languages developed during the medieval period and are descendants of the Latin language
• The Romance languages include Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian
• Modern Romance languages share certain characteristics with Latin
• Romance languages are spoken by approximately 700 million people today
• Many everyday words, even in English, have remained unchanged for over 2000 years
Latin is the language of the Western Church
Latin can be found on gravestones and plaques
Medical
o Latin is still used everyday in the medical field
o Bone names used today are the same or similar as the Latin bone names
o Radius is a bone in the arm and is the same in both Latin and English
o Many medical terms are used to communicate between medical professionals
o “PO” is an abbreviation used in medical prescriptions for “Per Os” which is direct Latin for “through the mouth” or “by mouth”
o Doctors use the Latin derivation “ipsilateral” to mean “on the same side” and “contralateral” to mean “on the other side” of the body
The latin names for bones and scientific english names are th same or very similar
Latin is used in many scientific names of diseases, medicines, plants and animals
Hippocrates was the first physician to accurately describe the disease symptoms of pnemonia
Hippocrates believed that thoughs, feelings and ideas come from the brain rather than the heart.
In addition hippocrates developed an oath of medical ethics for physicians to follow.
Hippocrates is now known as the Father of Medicine

Many of the Greek philosophers are still famous today because of their revolutionary ideas

The greek civilization was the rise to the renaissance era

The Olympics were a tradition started by the ancient Greeks
Our government is a democracy like the Greek one
